APPE Student Highlight: Arizona Igwe

This week’s APPE Student Highlight features Arizona Igwe, a fourth-year student from Loganville, GA, who recently completed an industry rotation with Bristol Myers Squibb on the Global Regulatory Strategy – Oncology team. Drawn to the experience by his interest in the drug development process, Arizona gained insight into how pharmacists contribute to regulatory strategy and patient access beyond traditional clinical roles. His rotation not only confirmed his passion for regulatory strategy, but also strengthened the skills he’ll carry forward as he applies for fellowships this fall.

Arizona Igwe (Indirect Industry, Bristol Myers Squibb):

  • Where are you from?
    • Loganville, GA
  • What are your career plans?
    • I plan to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, with a particular interest in regulatory affairs or medical affairs.
  • What led you to apply for this APPE?
    • I was drawn to this rotation because I wanted firsthand experience in the drug development process from the industry’s perspective. I knew it would give me the chance not only to gain some much-needed industry experience but also to learn how pharmacists contribute beyond the clinical setting—particularly in shaping regulatory strategy and ensuring patient access.
  • Describe your rotation experience
    • I completed my industry APPE at Bristol Myers Squibb on the Global Regulatory Strategy – Oncology team. During my time there, I worked on a number of projects that deepened my understanding of regulatory pathways and global health authority engagement. I led a topic discussion on the use of artificial intelligence in regulatory decision-making and led two presentations — one on the evolving role of tissue biopsies in clinical trials, including its implications for regulatory strategy and patient safety, and another on a recent FDA ODAC meeting. I also attended team meetings across many functional areas, giving me a broader perspective on the drug development lifecycle.
  • How will this experience help you in your future as a pharmacist?
    • This rotation solidified my interest in regulatory strategy and helped me build the foundational skills needed for a successful transition into industry. It strengthened my critical thinking, communication, and project management skills, all of which will be essential as I prepare to apply for industry fellowships this fall.
