In honor of Veterans Day this week, the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy recognized students, faculty, and staff who have served in their homeland’s armed forces. Veterans Day is observed annually in the United States in recognition of the selfless sacrifice of those who have served in the United States Armed Services. Similar holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, are observed in other countries to honor the service of their troops.
Mark Arthen, U.S. Coast Guard
- Class of 2025 PharmD Student Mark Arthen served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 2011-2017 in Los Angeles, California; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Petaluma, California. During his service, Arthen worked as a Boarding Team Member for the Coast Guard Cutter Rush and Sector Los Angeles, and a Health Services Technician/Pharmacy Technician at the Petaluma Training Center.
Dooyoung Choi, Republic of Korea Army
- Class of 2026 PharmD Student Dooyoung Choi served as a Sergeant in the Republic of Korea’s Army in South Korea for 19 months as a medic. He is pictured with his family.
Grant Cobb, U.S. Army
- Grant Cobb, a Class of 2027 PharmD student, served in the U.S. Army for eight and a half years as an Infantry Captain. While serving in the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Fort Polk Louisiana, Schofield Barracks Hawaii, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, and Thailand.
Dave Evans, U.S. Air Force
- Dave Evans, an Academic Senior Advisor for the Office of Student Affairs, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1989 to 1992 as a Senior Airman. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, he was stationed at the Aviano Air Base in Italy, the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, and in Texas.
Ronald Jones, U.S. Navy
- Client Services Technician Ronald Jones, based in Augusta, served as an E-4 Radio Man in the U.S. Navy from 1986-1990. During his time in the U.S. Navy, Jones was stationed at USS America CV-66 in Norfolk, VA.
Richard Lamb, U.S. Army
- Dr. Richard Lamb, an Associate Professor in Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, served for 11 years in the U.S. Army in Military Intelligence, rising to the rank of Captain. During his service, he was stationed in New York and North Carolina. He is pictured below in uniform (kneeling in the front) while he was conducting counter-intelligence work with the Moldavian military.
Svein Øie, Army of Norway
- Retired Dean and PBS Professor Dr. Svein Øie, pictured second from the left, served in the Army of Norway for 13 years, from 1963 to 1976. Throughout his time in the Army, he served in numerous roles, including a Corporal in Officer School, a Lieutenant in the Army Medical Core, and a Lieutenant in the Army Medical Core Reserves.
Troy Rucker, U.S. Navy
- CoP Business Manager Troy Rucker, served as an E-5 Operations Specialist in the U.S. Navy for four years. During his time in the U.S. Navy, Rucker was stationed in Norfolk, VA.
