BSPS Graduate Joshua Robinson Determined to Make a Difference for Others
Joshua “Josh” Robinson was only eight-years old when he realized he wanted to make a difference in the world.
In a poignant and deep conversation with his beloved “Papa,” or grandfather one evening in the early fall of 2011, the youngster was trying to come to terms with his MiMi’s illness. Papa’s wife/Josh’s grandmother was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for ovarian cancer at the time. At some point, the future Bulldog gazed up at his Papa and announced, “Papa, you know what I want to be when I grow up? I want to be a scientist and find a cure for cancer!” Later that evening, as the young Robinson pedaled away from his grandparent’s home to return to his own, his Papa heard him remark, “I would risk my life to find a cure for cancer. Maybe I can find a way!”
Fast-forward almost 14 years later. Much has happened in the life of that young boy from Bainbridge, GA since that heartfelt dialogue with his Papa. Robinson recently graduated summa cum laude from the UGA Honors College and the College of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. During his collegiate career, he received numerous accolades and awards for his academic prowess and altruistic spirit. Yet, his commitment to finding solutions to some of society’s greatest disease states, especially cancer, has remained steadfast.
Faculty describe Robinson as a “gentle giant”—quiet but impactful, with a soulful commitment to doing good. Thus, his recognitions should not be overshadowed, because Robinson has rightfully earned them. As an example, he was the recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award, which honors a graduating underclassman from each UGA school and college who embodies the university’s tenants of teaching, research, and service. The award was presented to Robinson by UGA President Jere Morehead during Honors Week this past April.
Complementing this recognition was an accolade bestowed upon Robinson at the College of Pharmacy’s BSPS Convocation Ceremony on May 9th. Robinson received the Student Service Award for his selfless work on behalf of his college, the university, and the community. Deeply committed to service and sustainability, Robinson has worked with the AmeriCorps Community Food Fellows program, UGArden, and the Marigold Collective—all organizations focused on food access and security, along with environmental stewardship. “I’m passionate about eliminating food waste and feeding the hungry,” he remarked.
Along with his service work, Robinson served as the student Marketing and Communications liaison for the BSPS program and was a College of Pharmacy ambassador. He also was the subject of a recent student spotlight video produced in partnership with the UGA Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication about the BSPS program.
Fortunately for the PharmDawg nation and UGA, Robinson will remain at the College of Pharmacy as he pursues a Master’s in Regulatory Sciences this fall under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Bartlett, the College’s University Professor and Associate Dean for Science Education, Research and Technology. “Josh approaches life with a thoughtful, grounded perspective. His outstanding recent contributions are the beginning of what promises to be a meaningful career in healthcare and public service.”
Robinson will serve as a graduate assistant in UGA’s Archway Partnership while he earns his master’s degree. His long-term career goals remain open as he considers many options. Assuredly, it will be serving others, especially in the healthcare arena.
Robinson’s quiet determination, selfless demeanor, and deep sense of purpose will make a difference in people’s lives. A Papa’s love and compassion, shared so many years ago on a quiet fall evening , will assure that it is so.
