New director of interprofessional education joins College of Pharmacy

The College of Pharmacy is pleased to welcome Dr. Timothy Brown as the new director of interprofessional education. His appointment is shared with the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership.  Dr. Brown will be responsible for interfacing with both pharmacy and medical students and preceptors, brainstorming strategies and creating work plans to strengthen interprofessional education in both colleges. “My ultimate goal will be to increase awareness and stress the importance that patient care is a team sport, and all members are integral to ensuring we all receive optimal healthcare,” commented Dr. Brown.

Dr. Brown received his doctorate from Campbell University College of Pharmacy, and he completed his residency training at the Medical College of Virginia. Prior to joining UGA, Dr. Brown was a primary care pharmacist in the residency program at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Center for Family Medicine for 25 years. In this role, he served as a preceptor for pharmacy and medical students from across the country and was the first pharmacist to be awarded Professor status at Northeast Ohio Medical University.

In 2018, Dr. Brown was named the Ohio Health-System Pharmacist of the Year and received the Cleveland Clinic Akron General “Graduate Medical Education Leader of the Year” award.  He also was recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians as the “2017 Outstanding Faculty for Live Activities.”  Dr. Brown is a past board member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and was recognized nationally as a leader within Ambulatory Care by this organization. He is the co-editor of two books designed to help others build their practice model in an Ambulatory Care setting, as well as co-creator of an outpatient intervention tracking application. For the past 15 years, he hosted a monthly drive-time radio segment answering call-in questions from listeners regarding health and pharmacy issues. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors for Project Learn of Summit County and the Community AIDS Network, both in Akron.

Beyond work, Dr. Brown enjoys reading, traveling, fitness and serving the community.
