Cameron Thomas, Assistant Professor
- Where are you from originally? What brought you to Athens and UGA?
- Hometown: Macclenny, FL
- The opportunity to pursue my passions for research and teaching brought me to Athens and UGA.
- Where did you receive your training/education?
- PharmD – University of Florida
- PGY1 Pharmacy Residency – UF Health Jacksonville
- PGY2 Clinical Pharmacogenetics – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
- T32 PARADIGM Fellowship (sponsored by NHGRI) – University of Florida
- PhD – University of Florida
- How did you become interested in your chosen field/profession? What are your areas of interest and expertise?
- My interest in pharmacogenomics and precision medicine originated during pharmacy school at the University of Florida. I was introduced to pharmacogenetics during my second year of pharmacy school and pursed a research opportunity at Nemours Children’s Health to further explore the field. This led me to pursue post-graduate training in clinical pharmacogenetics at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During my residency, I decided to pursue a career as a clinician-scientist dedicated to incorporating pharmacogenomics into precision medicine. During my fellowship, I worked on a pragmatic clinical study evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of a CYP2D6-guided approach to acute pain management. This aspect of my training solidified my desire to incorporate pharmacogenomics into precision medicine to individualize therapy, advance patient safety, and improve patient outcomes. My passion for improving patient care and safety led me to pursue graduate education that included training in artificial intelligence and natural language processing to extract critical insights from narrative clinical notes.
- My research has focused on evaluating predictors of response to P2Y12 inhibitor therapy among real-world patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
- Why were you interested in applying for this position and coming to CoP/UGA?
- The research momentum and opportunities to participate in the Precision One Health initiative and engage in pedagogy at UGA are significant benefits for new faculty.
- What will you be responsible for in your new position?
- My responsibilities as an Assistant Professor include research, teaching, and service.
