Preparing the Next Generation of Cancer Researchers

The University of Georgia’s Office of Instruction has approved a Minor in Cancer Therapeutics for the College of Pharmacy for undergraduate students interested in a focused course of study in the field of oncology.

The Minor in Cancer Therapeutics aims to provide undergraduate students with a core understanding of cancer biology, treatment modalities, and emerging therapeutic strategies, including personalized or precision medicine. Designed to enhance students’ understanding of cancer research, clinical trials, and drug development, the Minor in Cancer Therapeutics provides the knowledge and skills relevant to careers in biomedical research, healthcare, and pharmaceutical sciences. Using the latest advancements in cancer therapeutics, this minor prepares students, particularly those pursuing graduate or professional medical and health education, for future careers in oncology and translational medicine.

Said Dr. Yaguang Xi, Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences (PBS), “This initiative underscores the mission of PBS in advancing interdisciplinary education and research in oncology. The Minor in Cancer Therapeutics bridges the gap between basic science and clinical application, equipping students with the knowledge and perspective needed to drive progress in cancer therapeutics and translational medicine.”

Effective fall 2025, the Minor in Cancer Therapeutics has a 15-hour requirement, with six hours of required courses and nine hours of electives.  All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.0) or higher to satisfy the minor’s requirements. Further information about the Minor can be found in the UGA Bulletin.

This is the second minor offered by the College of Pharmacy.  A Minor in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences provides undergraduate students with a solid foundation in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, exploring how drugs interact with the body—from discovery to delivery and treatment. This minor prepares students for careers or advanced study in research, healthcare, pharmacy, biotechnology, and more. Designed for flexibility, the minor complements a wide range of majors—both science and non-science—offering a unique opportunity to engage with the scientific and practical aspects of drugs and biomedical innovations.

For further information regarding the Minor in Cancer Therapeutics, contact Dr. Xi, who will play a key role in leading the program and will each one of its required courses, PMCY 4000/6000: “War on Cancer.”  To learn more about either minor, contact Dr. Singh Rekhi, Director of the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, or  Leslie Standridge, Academic Advisor.
