Dr. Brian Seagraves Honored with William T. Robie Inclusive Excellence Award

Dr. Brian Seagraves, Instructor and Academic Professional in Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, was honored with the prestigious William T. Robie Inclusive Excellence Award, recognizing his steadfast dedication to fostering inclusivity and connection across diverse communities. Known for his hands-on approach to education and advocacy, Dr. Seagraves works tirelessly to break down barriers and encourages students to engage with the world beyond their own experiences.

The award was presented at the 2025 William T. Robie III Inclusive Excellence and Lecture and Award program, held February 6th.

Dr. Seagraves emphasizes treating individuals with respect and cultivating curiosity, open-mindedness, and empathy. “We have more in common than we have differences, and this drives my efforts to connect with others. I’ve always tried to take the time to get to know people, ask questions, and learn from their experiences. This philosophy is something I try to impart to my students.” He encourages students to get involved in the community and expose themselves to different environments. “I hope it inspires students to approach new perspectives not with judgment, but with genuine interest and empathy.”

He stresses the importance of acceptance, especially for students who accompany him to clinics or outreach programs. “Before they get started, I ask students two important questions: ‘Can you be non-judgmental?’ and ‘Are you easily offended?’ The reason for these questions is simple: In healthcare and in the community, we must connect with others without letting biases or emotions cloud our judgment.” These real-world experiences serve as powerful lessons for his students, reinforcing the idea that inclusivity is best fostered through real-world exposure and dialogue.

Open dialogue is crucial to inclusivity. “True open dialogue, as I see it, is a two-way street,” he reflected. “It’s more than just ethnicity or race—it’s about understanding each other’s experiences and perspectives as well. By asking questions and learning about one another, people can break down barriers and build trust, which is essential for patient care and well-being.”

Looking ahead to further nurture a diverse environment, Dr. Seagraves advocates for integrating more community service into the curriculum. “By involving students in the community, they not only build connections but also understand the importance of contributing to the well-being of others. My philosophy is rooted in the verse ‘…to whom much is given, much is required.’ ” (Luke 12:48)

Receiving the Inclusive Excellence Award is not just a recognition of past efforts, but a reflection of Dr. Seagraves’ lifelong commitment to his vocation. “The work I do is about making a difference, no matter how small. The award represents something much larger—it’s named after a man who overcame tremendous adversity and still gave his best. To me, that’s what heroism is about; Mr. Robie is the true hero. I hope that the work I’m doing will inspire future generations to continue pushing forward Mr. Robie’s mission of inclusivity and understanding.”
