Dr. Joshua Caballero, PharmD, BCPP, FCCP, has been named an Associate Professor (Limited Term) for Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy at the College of Pharmacy. Dr. Caballero has committed his scholarship and research to chronic diseases and the impact of medication adherence and cognition in underserved populations. In his role at CoP, he will provide classroom instruction on social administrative sciences and psychiatric diseases. “I am thrilled to be in an institution such as the University of Georgia, where I can return to my roots in research and student instruction and involvement,” said Dr. Caballero.
A native of Miami, FL, Dr. Caballero said his passion for his field came as a result of volunteer experiences at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, along with psychology classes in college. He received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Florida and his PharmD from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. During his postdoctoral training, he completed a PGY2 in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and a Pharmacotherapy Fellowship at The Ohio State University.
Dr. Caballero served in psychiatric clinical positions in Harlingen, TX; Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and Miami, FL. Focused on the academic and research arenas of higher education, he has been on faculty at the University of Texas at Austin and Pan American; Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale; and most recently at Larkin University in Miami, where he was a Professor and Head of the Clinical and Administrative Sciences Department.
The recipient of several awards and accolades, Dr. Caballero boasts an impressive curriculum vitae, which can be viewed on his CoP directory entry here. He is the lead editor of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ “Get the Residency,” which received five stars and a score of 97 upon first review. In addition, he was the first-ever recipient of the National Phi Delta Chi Distinguished Alumni Award in 2019. In his previous academic institutions, he received several Teacher of the Year recognitions, and he was an advisor to numerous student organizations.
He and his family, which includes his wife and two young sons, are looking to establish a permanent resident in the local area. The family is involved in sports and outdoor adventures, and Dr. Caballero is an avid climber, having scaled the highest peaks in Europe and Africa. In addition, he is a hunter, especially of gators, which will come in handy next football season!
And the significance of his affiliated academic institutions? The day prior to the incredulous UGA National Championship win, Dr. Caballero shared that while he was at four of the universities mentioned above – University of Florida, University of Tennessee, The Ohio State University, and the University of Texas – a National Championship Title was captured. Dr. Caballero will forever be considered our UGA good luck charm!
